The forward most piece of my cowling, the little forward upper lip piece has a crack in it. It has already had two other areas repaired and my A&P and I agree it just needs to be replaced. Any of you guys know a good place for getting sheet metal parts of old cessnas?

I've spent 5 years looking for that same part in salvage yards. They are all damaged, cracked, or worn! I finally bit the bullet and shelled out $500 ($600?) for a new one from Cessna. Still needs to be riveted on, and I still need another one for my 150C!

You may want to keep an eye on ebay. There is usually a cowling or two for sale there.

I bought a top cowling off Ebay for very little, just for the nosepiece, but, it too has a small crack. It is possible to take two good halves and join them together in the center with a backing plate reinforcement. Done properly with flush rivets, and the joint filled and smoothed with epoxy resin, it wouldn't even be visible after priming and painting, and may be the way I'll have to go.

I have considered tooling up to make fiberglass replacements, and jumping through the hoops for a PMA, but I really don't have the required resources. I think there would be enough of a market to make it worthwhile, for an established company.

Just a thought, I had about a 1 inch long crack which I stop drilled. I then cleaned the back of the metal well and used JB Weld to patch. Has held so far, and you don't have the exposed rivits either. Larry

Well I tried the JB weld idea. No luck. It held ok but after a couple of hours flying it, the vibration must have been too much for the JB weld. It really is in a bad place. It is just right of center. The crack extends from the bottom where the air inlet is to about 3/4 of an inch up and then in a long line about 2 - 2 1/2 inches long. tapering back towards the bottom of the piece. To any of the A&P's on the board, would it be un airworthy to just tin snip the little piece off??? and have an odd shaped front to my cowling?

Called about a couple of the cowls on barnstormers and most where already cracked.
