Yep! I was in my 20's and unwittingly built myself a small bomb! There was no more than 2 or 3 drops of kerosene in that clock. I must have figured it wasn't enough to raise the mix to a combustible level.

WRONG! eek

BTW, the clock ran for a couple of weeks after that, but once the kerosene completely evaporated, it quit again.

I have heard of some clocks being replaced with ones from Sporty's for a LOT less!

Ronald,
The Sporty's digital is just above my clock!! Why anyone would want to go back to the original style is beyond me. Having said that I applaud those who try to keep everything just like it left the factory. They are real time machines. For me, function wins out over style points,on the otherhand, I have a military eight day that came out of an F-86 that just might fit where the electric clock is now. We shall see!! grin

I've got one of those in my '68 Buick. Every minute or so I can hear a 'click!' as the clock winds itself.

What's also surprising to me is that the act of setting the time on these mechanical ones also adjusts the speed of the clock. If the clock is running fast then turning the hands back will cause the clock to run a few seconds slower per hour. After setting the clock a couple of times, my Buick is pretty accurate - a month later and the time is still correct, not bad for a mechanical clock.

Nowadays one can get the mechanical innards replaced with a quartz clock. Externally it looks the same, but internally it uses a quartz-crystal controlled electric motor. The result is incredible precision, no need for speed adjustment and no winding (so long as the electricity keeps flowing).

Here's one from Spruce [aircraftspruce.com]. Same clock, just over a hundered bucks.

The Sporty's clock has that annoying "Not for certified aircraft, for EXPERIMENTAL aircraft only" disclaimer. The "FAA/PMA-approved" clocks are nearly $300. What a rip.
