..I will be building a Zenith Zodiac.
Damon-
there's a builders' open house at Mexico. MO on June 26. Think you might be there?
If my plane's annual is finished by then, I plan on flying over.

I knew about the meeting, but was not planning to go. Too long a drive for me.
However I did go to an EAA meeting last weekend. It is held in the hanger of a guy that is scratch building 3 Zodiacs. One for himself, one for his brother and one to sell. So I got a chance to see everything up close for the first. Seeing his setup and talking with him has made me even more motivated to get started.

Was the Zodiac the one with the structural problems?

It's the one with inflight breakup due to fluttering (supposedly). They've come up with some recommended fixes.

Yes, the new owner is a club member, but I will leave it up to the new owner to reveal him/herself if they choose to.

I was out in Shawnee a couple of weeks ago and had the opportunity to talk to Damon's (former) mechanics.

Ho-lee-smokes.

I didn't get to look at 4901L (it's still at the airport there), but I already know I wouldn't hire those two clowns for anything aircraft related. Neither one of them are pilots. Both of them are sharks.

I stood in a large hangar while they proceeded to regale me with stories of their expensive repairs. At the moment, they were doing an annual on a Bonanza. The airplane had eight hours on it since the last extensive annual they'd performed on it, yet they'd already run the bill up over $20,000.

It appears they think "airworthy" and "like new" mean the same thing. It doesn't. However, it appears they've got a few customers who don't understand the difference either and are willing to hand over their wallets for no expense spared annuals.

If your prospective mechanic doesn't fly and it's a part time gig for them, run.

I will certainly be interested in getting your take on the plane when you start getting into it.

I have not flown since March. I have been trying to get setup to build a plane. Even managed to make a few rudder ribs, but still trying to get some issues worked out.

I am getting the flying itch bad enough I may start renting my CFI's 152 again or starting training in his Cardinal.
