Hi Folks,

I'm new to the club and forum, joining because I am in the market for a C-150 and wanted to buy Mike Arman's book.

I've been lurking for a week or so and I've learned a lot about the C150 and certainly enjoy the forum. It reminds me of some of the old pre-commercial-internet newsgroups.

I live in Northwestern New Brunswick, Canada (North East of Maine) and fly out of CCK3 (Grand Falls/Grand Sault).

While I got a PPL in '69, I didn't fly much after that. For some reason the bug got strong enough that I got recurrent last summer in CF-CZT, a C150M and is now a compulsion. grin
Renting is such a hassle, owning is pretty much a necessity in this area.

I think I would like something that is pretty much in shape, exterior/interior, with a mid-time or less motor; less that 5000 TTSN, IFR capable, and as new as possible (advice from the CFI/ AME that I trained with).

I probably won't say much for a while, but any help/guidance is appreciated.

Cheers

Murray
P.S. I'm not usually this formal. wink

Welcome to the forum.

I sort of disagree with the "as new as possible" criteria. Sure, all things being equal, newer is better. For 150s, from 1967 on they are pretty much alike and type of hours on the airframe and hours on the engine and its condition are more important than age in years.

I work very often in your area (have customer in Edmundston, Riviere Verte and Grand Sault). Beautifull region !

Try www.lespac.com [lespac.com]

Welcome to the club Murray! As you have probably already noted, the club is an excellent source of information on the bird. A number of names will stick with you as people with good insight and experience with the aircraft. Mike's book was invaluable when I went hunting for my 150. It would seem you have arrived at an aircraft purchase during a period where aircraft prices are declining. I bought my aircraft in October of 2007. By March of this year the valuations started to decline. Fuel costs played a large role early in the year, but the financial world collapse in the early fall has accelerated the decline in value. I created a 150 model as close to mine as possible for valuation purposes. I will, on occasion, plug the model into an aircraft valuation service such as the one utilized by AOPA. The net result has been a steady decline of about twenty five percent of my purchase price for the aircraft. I would suspect you may be able to find good aircraft at good prices duing this period. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words and the tips, folks, I'm listening carefully.

I am looking at a lot of planes and find it hard to evaluate whether the asking price is close to reality. The prices seem quite inflated compared to the prices mentioned in the conversations here. As well, the avionics are a mystery to me. Lot's to learn.

There aren't as many C150's for sale in Canada, but buying a used plane in the USA from Canada might be a hassle and expensive as our Dept of Trans doesn't recognize 337 forms and all 337 mods have to be removed or inspected ($$$).

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, but sometimes less fun is good.

Frederic,
thanks for the link, it's the first time I've seen it; it doesn't cross over the great canadian divide. I've looked in COPA's trade a plane and did some google searches but in English it seems to hit 9/10 provinces. There are a few not too far from Quebec City. I may need your help on a few words, as we tend to use English terms here, as you know if you visit! crazy

cheers

Hi Murray,

There's a fellow here in town (Kingston,Ont), who might be interested in selling his 150. I don't think he has the time to fly it any more. It's an 150M, but I can't remember the number of hours on it. I'll phone the owner up and see if he is indeed interested. Chris and I do his maintenance for him.
