Well, it took nearly a year, but they finally caught up with me. Getting home late last evening, my wife handed me an envelope, saying, "Here you go, and you thought you'd get away with it ... just give 'em the 50 bucks and forget it."

BUT IT'S THE PRINCIPLE, says I.

You see, here in Kansas we have a very friendly statute that exempts aircraft more than 35 years of age from property taxation. Our C-150C, "Cheap Date," is a young-looking 45-year-old.

Only catch is, the state requires the owner of these legacy aircraft to file for an exemption, accompanied by a notarized signature and a $50 fee. This is ludicrous; but then, my opinion is worth nothing -- I'll be headed to the county courthouse to pay up the filing fee.

Yeah, yeah -- I'm whining -- as most everyone on this forum has to pay very dearly in taxes every year on our little airplanes. Guess in the end, we're still fortunate in the Sunflower State that autos take the brunt of personal property taxes (keep this in mind if you ever think of moving here).

Sorry just had to vent a little.

But just wondering, how much do you pay in taxes every year?

No taxes here in Oregon. $50 to register the airplane each year. Of which the fee goes to Search an Rescue.

No fees in Florida, Tennessee, or Alaska (as far as I know, along with no sales tax... yay!)

In CT no annual tax. But you pay 6% sales tax even if you buy in another state.

I guess that depends upon the town you're in. Most (all?) Connecticut towns assess property tax on vehicles (cars, boats, motorcycles, etc.) But for airplanes, CT passed a law years ago that set up flat-rate taxes for airplanes based upon gross weight instead of assessed value. As a result I pay only $90/year to the town of Stratford and get a pretty little sticker to put on plane.

In MI,yearly registration is determined by gross wt. so $16.00 goes to the state...my part in the BAILOUT program (but I do get a MI Airport Directory). 6% Sales tax on original purchase price in MI at time of purchase.

$266 a year to the county for the 150 and they have it valued at $20K (I have probably triple that in it.)

Kicker is, $815 a year property tax on the hangar, and I don't own the land it sits on, I rent it. All in all I figure my hangar represents about 75% of my flying expense.

There is also the yearly Nav Canada fee for FSS, ATC services, etc. If I remember correctly, it starts at about $80 CDN for our size of aircraft and it goes up from there. It's payable for all registered aircraft in Canada.
