The engine is first, and disassembly is proceeding. I found a truly wonderful mag shop. Magneto Service, Inc. at Boeing Field in Seattle. Talk to Cliff.
The short version ... they will look at your Slicks and make a determination about the practicallity of the 500-hour service, or if you should exchange ... no charge. The 500-hour is $253.
They spent a good deal of time on the phone with me talking about Slick mags. One valuable piece of data passed on was to watch out for low priced exchange Slicks. "Exchange" Slicks, BTW are new. It doesn't pay to overhaul Slicks. Some recent Slicks are subject to an AD. If you are exchanging, be CERTAIN to get mags with serial numbers above 0808453.
My mags are 1996 manufacture, which was a good year. Cliff says if the impulse coupling is good, the 500-hour is what they need. If he finds the impulse coupling shot, he will button the mags back up and send 'em back to me so I can exchange 'em.

Haven't installed them, yet!) | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 4,768 Likes: 3 Member/2500+posts | Member/2500+posts Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 4,768 Likes: 3 | I shipped the mags off to Aircraft Magneto Services on Friday. They received them Monday (yesterday).
They completed the 500-hour service and are shipping them back to me today (Tuesday). $571.91 (includes WSST) for both.

I have a relatively new set of 4301's with impulse couplings on both, so I loaned him mine (I'll not need them for a while, yet). At his insistance, they will be returned to me with fresh inspections, after his replacements arrive and are installed. I'll give him the above info! | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 4,768 Likes: 3 Member/2500+posts | Member/2500+posts Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 4,768 Likes: 3 | My neighbor's mags gave it up, and he's short of capital until next month. Its the best deal I've found, and great customer service into the bargain. One point he made is that they prefer to get the mags just as they came off the airplane except the ignition harness. In other words, don't remove the gear. They will R&R the gear with a new nut and cotter pin, torqued to the proper spec, ready to re-install on the airplane.
I had removed my gears because all the other company's I had looked at had an additional charge for removing the gear.
Not a big deal. Cliff just made sure I knew the torque specs and let me know that he had sent along a new nut and cotter pin.
I love these guys.
