The rotating beacon on George (C150 VH-PJG)has gone into limbo land and not working. Also it keeps on blowing fuses.
Is there a replacment available and can I fit a strobe unit in its place.
Advice please

Brian,

me again,

As it happens I am going to play with my aircraft tomorrow (Wed) down at Camden with my old Boss from my Navair days. He has his own business now call DENT AVAITION (not quite sure it was a good choice of business names as such) I'll run it past him, and get back to you - he's owned a couple of 150/152's so he may be able to point you in the right direction, or come up with a cheap fix for the problem at will get you back up and running

Let you know how I go tomorrow evening

Cheers

Matt Gray

I just changed out an old rotating (that actually rotated at least some of the time) on a 63 172D. We could have bought a self contained strobe unit that would fit nicely or, as we ended up with, a self contained flasher unit. I ordered an adapter plate to fill in the big mounting space left from the removal of the old beacon. It already has the nut pressed into it to accomodate the installation of the new flasher assy. The wiring is okay as the new unit draws less current and you change the circuit breaker/fuse from 10 amps to 5. Really an easy installation.

I guess to really answer your question, yes. There are alternatives to replacing the rotating beacon. There are stobe assemblies that drop right in and there's flashers as well. Your budget and taste in external lighting are your limiting factors.

One caution, however. If your old unit has been blowing fuses, I would recommend inspecting the entire wiring run, all connectors, lugs, and beacon switch for overheating damage. Might save your B(e)ACON!

Gidday, Mate.

Thank you for your input as these unexplained electrical problems give me the Poos..
George will be in for another 100hrly (3rd in a year) in a week or so and it will give us a good chance to check the system right out whilst all the panels are removed. If all is well in the wiring and switches and it is the unit I will need one in a rush as it is used for night VFR training, can you give some advice on what and where to get one of these units.
Kind Regards
Brian

As Gary has pointed out, there are several good choices. I suggest you review the Whelen Aviation catalog for the various possibilities.

http://aviation.whelen.com/

A drop in strobe such as the HRCFA series is the easiest strobe installation you can get, just remove one and install the other. Most work is insuring good grounds and power connections and doing the paperwork.

Another possibility is the 70509 Halogen flasher mounted using the 50519 adapter. This is not a strobe and is more like the flashing light used on "later" Cessnas (later than yours).

Another possibility is the use of the H103 adapter and mount a A470A series strobe head with a remote power supply mounted behind the baggage compartment. You could do this in conjunction with wing tip strobes.

Poke thru the catalog and then go to a distributor site such as Chief Aircraft parts or Aircraft Spruce and see what they suggest and handle.

Some of your consideration on lens color red or split red white or all white (not good for nite) light output and coverage requirements will depend on your national regs which I suspect mirror the US requirements.
