A friend near Cleveland pointed me to a 1967 150G with about 1620 TT and 620 SMOH. The owner (who knows my friend very well) said he bought the airplane in 1970 and has owned it since, with the same mechanic maintaining the airplane all these years (including the overhaul). It was stripped and repainted about 10 years ago and has newer VFR avionics. The 150 had three previous owners from 1967 - 1970 (a flight school which put on the first 500 hours, then two FBO's). The reason for the sale is that the owner is now past 80 and fears he cannot pass the next medical (and will now move into the sport pilot category). The asking price seems high at $29,000.

I know I would rather have an aerobat, but I have not had much luck on this. So I wonder if this 150G would be a good possiblity?

Only thing I could say is if it is from 1967 and has only flown 1620 hours, and the first 500 were from a flight school that owned it - do some math here Steven....

a 38 year old airplane with 1620 hours has been flown what - 43 hours a year average? It's been sitting a lot.

That may be good - but with most airplanes that is bad. Things in aircraft don't like to sit.

I think you'd find a lot of work to be done...even at 620 SMOH, when was that done (calendar time)??

Does sound a bit pricey. But, a looksie may still be in order. If it is as good looking and well maintained as suggested, just may be worth the extra price.

For my money I would pass on it. Way too much money for a VFR only plane that's not been flown much.

You also have to consider the thing never made TBO the first time around and you don't know the quality of the overhaul at this point.

You didn't say if it was hangared or not, but in any case I'd want the wing tanks pulled and have a good look underneath for corrosion and also a good borescope of the engine for added security.

Then I'd talk him down about $10,000 if I could. I just don't think a VFR C150 is worth that much no matter what you do to it. In other words, I wouldn't want to give more than $19K for it, and then that amount if it was in great shape.

In fact, I have now spoken with the mechanic/A&P who maintained the airplane for the owner since 1972. He performed the overhaul in 1980, replacing bearings, valves, valve springs, etc. The airplane was stripped and re-painted at that time too. The airplane flew 620 hours since then. It has been hangered all these years and is well maintained, but it is out of annual as of November, 2004 (owner elected not to annual since he did not want to fly in the though he has run up the engine during its winter sleep). Seller will have the annual inspection done at sale. The mechanic said he has maintained the airplane meticulously all these years with details in the logs and that all AD's are complied with.

Still, I do think $29,000 is a bit much even with 1620 TT. My friend who refered me to this 150 says that the owner won't budge much on price since he considers this airplane his pride and wouldn't be selling except for his age (80 years) and fear of not passing medical. Incidently, the mechanic is almost as old at 78.

Steven,
This plane WILL need a lot of work in the next couple of
years, once it starts flying regularly.
TSMO is not just measured by hrs on the engine but also
calendar time and I am not sure but I think 25 years is WAY
past TBO.
I know you have been looking to buy a plane for quite a
while and just can't seem to find the right one.
It can be very unnerving to take that big step and finaly cross the
hurdle but it seems to me you are going about this like
someone buying a car. Low miles, great paint, always garaged
ect. Planes are not like cars. Few if any are hangared for
their whole life, too few hours are worse than above average
and finding the perfect paint is a tough thing.
In my opinion (not that it means anything) $29000 is WAY
too much for a 38 year old C150 with a 25 year old engine overhaul.
Look closer to home for a not so pretty 150/152 that has
been used but taken care of and put the extra $$$ into making it the plane you are looking for.
You will be more proud of one that you made nice than one bought that way.
I know!

The TBO for the O-200A straight from Continental Motor's mouth is 1800 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first.

I think too much for that plane, I own a 150 67G. Be patient and you will find a better one for under $23,000. It took me a year to finf mine. Got a great deal most importantly a great plane.

I was lucky with mine.

The day the one I was going to buy got destroyed I found a sweet '67 G model for sale for only 1000 bucks more---- and 1000 hours less on the engine!!

2 weeks later, I flew up to Ohio commercial, and came back in my very own Cessna 150.

Not only was the engine new, but the interior is 4 or 5 years old, the paint is excellent, and all around a great aircraft!!

I got extremely lucky with this one!

Our 150G w/low time engine was $14,000. We've had it a year and have been very pleased with it.

Just my 2 cents.
