Hi folks,

As I patiently wait(yeah right) to hear about the drug band by the FAA being lifted for my medical, I'm still searching the for sale adds. I've noticed on some of them that the engine hours are over the limts for over haul. Can someone explain how that can be please. I've also have seen the following, SPOH & TSMOH. I know what TTAF & SMOH are but not these.

Hi Chester,

1. It's perfectly legal for individual owners to run their engines past TBO as long as the engine continues to pass inspections and the A&P signs it off as being airworthy.

If buying a plane under these conditions, the buyer should assume the engine day's are numbered (regardless how well the engine is performing) and the price of the plane should reflect this.

2. SPOH = Since Prop Overhaul

3. TSMOH = Time Since Major Overhaul (same as SMOH)

Thanks for clearing up that issue for me Jim.

EAA has told me that the flight surgeon said "SOON". He just didn't say how soon.

Seems like Trade-a-Plane used to include a key to all the acronyms so people could decipher their for-sale ads. I don't know if they still do or not...but they were kind of interesting to read through.

TAP still has the 411 on the contactions. Sometimes they're a PITA to sort though. I can understand how a SNAFU in not having the info on what they mean could make things a total FUBAR, particularly when it comes to items such as VOR, GS, GPS, ADF, RNAV, TSPOH, TSN, SMOH, TTOH, TTAFE ETC. Of course, other things such as financing... like APR, and if using it for a buisness EBITDA also are important particularly in a recessionary econmic environment where the GDP is decreasing YOY.
