OK.....before you tell me to go to eBay for a good deal, I thought I'd pass it by you guys and see if anyone out there is interested in upgrading their GPS! And if you are, I'd be interested in buying your slightly bruised BUT in perfect working conding GPS at an unheard of GOOD Deal. I'm looking specifically at a Lowrance airmap 1000 or something equivilent. Surely, someone out there is looking to upgrade to a colored moving map! All offers will be taken into consideration!
I'm using the AirMap500, and like you, considered the 1000; however, in a 150, if you want to change your mind, you have to step outside the aircraft. Thus, size truly does matter. Just thought you might want to condsider that factor! If you'd like, I can send you a great shot of how you can make an attachment which works fantastic.
Sorry about that. The stepping outside was for my brain; i.e.: If I need to change my mind there's not enough room in my 150 to do it, so step outside. As for the 500 Vs the 1000 they do basically the same thing, but the 500 is half the size compared to the 1000. Second, due to size, it tends to block out the instrument panel; thus, a second consideration.
Here's a shot of my 500 on the left column. The neat thing about putting it here is: it's not on the yoke, thus readable 100% of the time, and due to my bi-focals a heck of a lot easier to read.
I like that setup...AND I've got bi-focals too so that sure would help me. Looked at the 500 and it's one that I could live with. So, I'll do some research and see if I can pick one up. Thanks for your feedback! The 1000 would definitely take a lot of space on the yoke...good point! Again, thanks.
Just got one from Sproty's $399 minus 5% for using my AOPA credit card. I now have an AIRMAP 100 for sale. If anyone is interested send me a PM
As an Airmap 100 owner (and not trading in anytime soon) I'd be curious to hear your feedback on the 500. What's the learning curve like moving from the 100? Does it still have the screen with the big black arrow at the top pointing the way to your destination? (I love that feature!)
I haven't used it in the plane yet, just got it last night. Playing with it in the living room the learning curve is not that steep. There arn't as many screens to choose from as the 100 and the 100 seems easier to find waypoints. (Maybe I just need more practice) The screen with the big arrow has been replaced with an HSI screen. The display is bigger as is the control panel. The voltage regulator for the 100 was built in to the unit. It is in the plug for the 500, also the power connector for the 500 has two pins that stick out when not connected to the unit. I don't always take my GPS with me but alwasy had the cord in the socket, don't know if I will do this now with those pins exposed. Give me a couple of weeks with it in the plane and I'll have a better report.
I was looking at getting the Airmap 1000 in January, but after a little playing around, My Airmap 500 does pretty much the same stuff. so I kept it. Take a look at the Airmap 500 it is a great unit.
