Well, my annual inspection on the 152 revealed cracks around the hubs. They aren't bad enough to fail the annual but will probably need to be changed out soon.

And, of course, McCauley hubs are no longer marketed mad My brakes, bearings and axles are in excellent condition so I don't want to shell out $1000.00 plus for the Cleveland refit.

Does anyone have a set of good McCauley 6" hubs they are willing to sell?

Thanks!

If this is the three piece wheel, steel flanges and die cast center hub and six allen head capscrews on each side, and the cracks are in the bolt holes, I'd be darn leery of operating the airplane with one cracked.

Just a heads up on this. We have had numorous McCauley 6" hub spoke cracks of the last few years. In fact, no one that I fly with still uses them. I realize we are a little rougher on our planes up here but keep in mind, we manage to crack them while using big soft tires. Frankly, I'm surprized there is not an A.D. out on them. I have never seen one fail completely but I sure wouldn't want to be the first to see how that goes.
So far, i have never found a crack in a Cleveland.

Dennis,

I may have a deal made in heaven for you.

If I have what you need on Queenie (The corrosion queen where Hungs engine came from) I'll be glad to swap with you. I'll need your old ones to put back on Queenie so I can move her sad carcass around. She'll never fly again so cracked hubs or not makes no difference, I just need to be able to move her around as needed.

I'm not sure what's on her now, I think they're McCauley's but I'll find out and get back to you. Stand by.

The original hubs were magnesium, and very prone to cracking, plus corrosion. Replacement hubs were aluminum. Noticeable weight difference if you held both of them, but not so prone to cracking. I suppose most of the MAG hubs are out of service, but now the years have taken their toll on the aluminum ones too.

I actually submitted an article for the 150 club newsletter in the early '80's right after the club was founded, but it seems Skip Carden was more interested in publishing articles on how to do things on the cheap, and many time illegal, than publish a serious maintenance article about what was a common problem at the time. It never got published that I know of.

I have a set of Aluminum 3 (through)bolt aluminum Hubs. Came off a 152. They are in PA. I am currently in the Jungles of Colombia. I won't be home until the Jun Jul time frame. I might be able to get my son to mail them to you. 300.00 for the paie. they come with the brake rotor.

Thanks to all (at least half-a dozen offers!)who responded to my request for McCauley hubs.
Found a set on the field. One of the guys at Creve Coeur had switched over from McCauley to Clevelands and had tossed the hubs into a surplus pile at the back of his hangar. I didn't have to worry about shipping cost and times, and the wheels look as if they came straight out of the box.

Thanks again for all who offered - it's things like this that make this club great.
