I'm ready to set-up my FAA check ride, however the nav side of my radio is in picking up the vor not more than 8 miles out. a local a my airport will let me have a working kx155 nav/com with gs and recent yellow tag for 200 bucks! but its a 28v. if any one knows where i can get one please let me know. my avionics shop said they can swap out the Narco for the king in a day. mentioning on the thread about Mentors, my mentor is the one letting me have the kx155. what a great guy he has been!

Upward converter usually costs a lot of money.

It's a great deal, but you'd be better off in the long run sticking with 12v radios. Perhaps your mentor wouldn't mind if you traded it, or even sold it for more than you payed?

What radio do you have in the plane now?

Nav (or comm) radios usually either work or they don't. Something to consider is the coax connections. Degraded performance is usually an antenna connection problem, or corrosion elsewhere in the connections. The coax braid and center conductor are attached to the separate "cat whisker" antenna elements with terminals and nuts, and the center conductor often breaks at the terminal. Just install a new terminal and re-attach. It is also possible the coax connections in the tray are corroded. Pulling the radio out and putting it back in often clears the corrosion enough for it to work properly again. Is there an inline splitter for use of another receiver on the same antenna (2nd nav or glideslope)? These or their connections sometimes go bad, and if they no longer connect a 2nd radio, they should be removed.

a MX 300 nav/com and the avionics shop checked out the coaxles antinas splitters and the radio and determined it was internal on the nav side but would have to be sent off to be repaired.

Call Bay Avionics at PVG, they might be able to help or have the parts. (757) 488-7700. Good luck on getting it fixed and especially on your check ride. Hope you don't have the same luck as I had on my check ride (canceled 5 times due to weather and other crap before I took it).
