Thanks for the valuation. I need to go learn to do that.

If you're an AOPA member, go to their Web site www.aopa.org [aopa.org] then select "A/C Valuation" on the left side of the screen. They allow you to do six (6) valuations per day.

When the owner was flying it, he was using Avgas because he said 100LL has about four times too much lead. (I have no clue.)

I think he said/meant "Auto Gas" (the unleaded gas used in automobiles). Avgas is "Aviation Gas", designated as 100LL (100 Octane, Low Lead). Low Lead means it has less lead than the older Aviation Gas, but still more than in Auto Gas.

One was a 320 the owner indicated was illegal for anything other than backup. (again, outside my realm of knowledge)

Older 360-channel radios are no longer legal. Current radios have 720 or more channels. Actually, it has more to do with the frequency tolerance of the radio. The FAA web site has a list of obsolete radios, but I can't find it right now. You can read a bit of info here: Comm Radios [swaviator.com]

Thanks Hung--

I guess that shows everyone how much I know...

What do you guys think about this plane? It is older than what I was looking for but it looks like someone put a lot of work in it...

Don't worry, John. Once you have a plane of your own, you'll gain knowledge very quickly. I started flying in 1995 and was a renter until 2001. During that time, I didn't know much about airplanes other than flying them. Once bought my plane (the same one I was renting) and joined the Club, I started picking up knowledge about planes and engines, although there's still a lot more to learn.

Its on the FCC web site. Also in the AOPA web site somewhere.

The best thing you can do if you encounter one of these radios is plan on removing it, as it is simply dead weight, ready for the scrap heap.

All--

I just wanted to report back on my weekend, in case anyone is interested. I had a great time in PA, driving around the state looking at planes. In all, I got to see three and fly two of them.

I have already mentioned the 1st and 2nd in my list earlier in this thread. The 2nd one sold before I could get there and the 1st one in my list just did not appeal to me.

The other two?

Looks good in pictures, New Paint, carpet Seat Covers, Wing Tips, Engine Heater(wont need that in Texas)

I went to see the 3rd one on Saturday. It looked very nice in the pictures and did not disappoint me when I got there. The outside was very nice. The inside was not so good however. There was nothing awful about the interior but if could use some work. I reviewed all of the logs and everything appeared to be in order to my novice eye. I mean, it appeared to be in annual and stuff. However, the 1st ten years of the airframe log was missing. That was a real downer.

Anyway, the seller and I flew it. Surprisingly, it cranked right up even though it was a very cold day. That was cool. Actually, it cranked very easy. Not sure what that means. We barely primed it. One squirt I think.

It flew fine and I was thinking to myself that I could buy the plane, do some interior work, install a GPS and I?d have a nice plane. I left there trying to convince myself that missing logs was not that big of a deal. I even left the owner $100 cash to pay for the gas to take the plane over to another airport about 20-30 miles away for a pre-buy inspection. He asked for a deposit but, I was not that committed yet.

I went to see the 4th plane on my list Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised to see how organized and well kept the logs and records were for the plane. I could tell they took their record keeping seriously. It appeared that it had never missed an annual and I could find nothing really odd about the plane other than the engine had come from a Tomahawk.

I think I want to buy this plane and I am doing the footwork to have it inspected. I am going to have an annual performed on it early next week (weather permitting). The seller assures me that if they find anything wrong, he?ll have it fixed. He seemed to be very confident that the plane would withstand the scrutiny. I hope it does.

I ordered the records on CD from the FAA. I hope I get those quickly and everything is in order.

Well, that?s it. I hope this is the one. Thanks for all your feedback so far.

Don't let interior scare you. With the help of Shelby at tnwings.com, you can "do it yourself" on seats and carpet, and some glue and paint will make the plastic like new (if not terribly torn up). However, the second bird sounds like a good one too. Hope it works out.
