I would like some help/advice on purchasing and using a PDA GPS. I want to put together a low cost package. I have a PDA iPAQ 1945. Looking to purchase a GPS, software and yoke clamp.
I have seen a program called Pocket FMS sharware. Has anyone used this? If you use a bluetooth GPS will this have any effect on other things in the cockpit? Is it important to have all the componets hard wired and connected to the airplane electrical system? I have a lot of questions so if anyone has already done this please let me know and include part or model numbers etc. On Friday 1-21-05 I will be attending the Great Lakes International Aviation Conference in Lansing, Michigan.
There will be many vendors at the conference, what kind of questions should I be asking regarding PDA GPS navigation?

Thanks
Richard

Richard,

Do a "Search" for PDA GPS and look through the archives. We have been discussing the topic to death here in the last couple of months. This might get you some base information to which you can then ask more pointed questions.

There are several options, and would sure hate to miss some of them for you. Unfortunately, many of the discussions ended up being off the original topic line, so the search should display those with PDA GPS in the body of the post.

Try Palmflying.com. A buddy of mine has the Anywhere set up with everything including weather. He was using a 295 and now just won't shut up about the Anywhere. I, like a lot of others fly a 150 for a reason $$$ or the lack there of. I was looking at duplicating his set up and found that this site is very helpful and has additional links.

Thanks for the web site it was helpful. In the last month or two I read an article about a guy that mounted a PDA in his ultra light. The article went on to explain where he purchased all of the other parts like the GPS and software. The total cost for everything was $500.00. I know that the article was in some aviation magazine but can't find it.
Has anyone read the article and can tell me what magazine, month and page. Still planning to put together PDA/GPS and looking for ideas.

Thanks

Richard

I haven't read the article, but you can easily do this for $500 or less. My brand new full blown Dell Axim X30 High (624mhz processor/bluetooth/wifi) was $297 from Dell, free shipping. My Acore 600 Bluetooth WAAS GPS was $102 plus shipping for $117, and the basic Copilotsoft softare is free currently with the Pro version eventually being less than $100. So it is not rocket science to get it all under $500 or maybe under $400 if you get a used Ipaq, a wired GPS and free software...maybe even less than $300 for a capable system.

Jeff, where did you buy your AG-600. I have read all the reviews and they are very good however, I have not found anyone that sells them. I have sent an inquiry to the home office asking the question.

Check out this guy on ebay fido-dido999
He is the one I bought mine from (as did another club member). Be patient on Canadian mail service, but I got it within 10 days of winning the auction and the guy was good with email follow up. That's where I got mine, and it looks like you may do better than I did on price. (one currently $31.00 with 18hours to go...I paid $102)
