I've always used red myself and never had an issue.

RE: the dim light in a standard 150 overhead instrument panel light - that is why I always used to wear one of these [mypilotstore.com] when flying at night. It's a shame that didn't come up in conversation at your departure airport prior to your pre-flight Mark, someone might have sent one of these along with you...
