I'll be very interested in hearing from anyone who has done this.

A lot of white LED lights don't put out much red light, so it would be much better to use a red LED with a clear window. I looked a couple of times for a red LED, but haven't found anything with the right base, and I'd rather keep it to just a direct replacement if possible. There's also a chance that a replacement could cause radio noise, but I haven't gotten any to test.
