How about getting a used iPad/iPhone and Foreflight or WingX Pro? Alternatively, an Android phone/tablet and Avare or other Android apps? You could then dedicate the device to aviation.
For the price of a used Garmin 496 you might even be able to find a new iPad mini on sale. Then you'd have a device for which you can download other useful aviation functions.
