Good news, Mark. At least now you have some breathing room! I had quite a bit of static in my MX 300. I pulled the radio out and used contact cleaner. I had to use a soda straw to clean the back of the tray, but it worked great (knock on wood)! I hope both the COM and NAV on your older radio work like a charm.
