Also...a lot of GA airports I've been to are not in the most populated of areas. I feel better with the better coverage.
I'm going to have to agree with Sandy here. My iPhone is on AT&T and my iPad is on Verizon. There have been many times when I have signal from Verizon but not with AT&T. Most often that happens to be at an airport, since they are generally on the edge of town and not close to the population centers where the cell towers are usually located.
I have the smallest data plan, and it seems to work fine for me. The iPad data plans work differently than the normal cell phone plans do. It is basically month-to-month, no year (or more) commitments. You can turn it on when you need it and off when you don't (although you will probably end up leaving it on all the time). You can also up your data plan if you are starting to run out, even if it is in the middle of the month.
