There is LOTS more to discuss before you get serious about buying a plane. For instance, place very little if any confidence in anything the "current" mechanic has to say. You'll need an impartial mechanic for any pre-buy (which should really be an annual inspection). Get the FAA CD on the airplane. Do all of your homework before ANY money changes hands. There's lot's more to learn, first!
You are at an advantage here because the owner is a club member, and there are probably some here who know the mechanic and maybe even the airplane, but don't throw caution to the wind, either.
