The heading indicator went out on the 150L. Could someone steer me to a place I can purchase one? Also, need a new VOR.

What part number directional gyro? This is from www.cessnaparts.com [cessnaparts.com]:

New: Part No. C661075-0104 GYRO DIREC
$ 2,708.10 (EA)
Core/Deposit of $ 3,010.00 additional
EXACT SAME PART NUMBER MUST BE EXCHANGED FOR CREDIT

Reconditioned: Part No. C661075-0104RX GYRO DIREC
$ 1,036.45 (EA)
Core/Deposit of $ 3,010.00 additional
EXACT SAME PART NUMBER MUST BE EXCHANGED FOR CREDIT

Wow, that's a steep deposit. Also, I doubt if the directional gyro you pull out will be the exact same part number.

Can you get yours rebuilt?

You need a new VOR? Do you mean the CDI indicator? Do you have one already in the plane and want to replace it with the same kind? What kind of nav/com do you have?

I'm a student pilot. I'm learning in my son's 1973 150L. Last week on a cross country, the CDI wasn't moving. The To/From bar would go up and down a little, but the needle didn't move.

I'll have to check with my son to see what nav/com is in the plane currently.

Once I'm certificated (is that a word?), I'm going to be part owner of the 150L - Loosy Sue.

Sounds like you need to have an avionics tech look at it. Welcome to the fa$$cinating world of airplane owner$$hip.

p.$.

When I bought my plane, the attitude indicator was crapped out. I took it to an FBO repair facility. They removed it, sent it to a place called the Gyro House somewhere here in California to have it rebuilt, and then reinstalled it. Cost me somewhere about $750. I'd be surprised if you get away much cheaper than that for either your DG or CDI problems (unless it's something easy like a loose wire or something).

I think there is some confusion here, so let's make sure we understand.

Newmem is describing his VOR head, not the DG.

Definately an avionics issue. Could be anything from the antenna to wiring to a bad "Nav" side of the radio to operator error.

Did you tune the Nav to the appropriate station? What was the range(distance) to the station? Could you hear the station identifier when turning up the Nav volume?

All these things would help in trouble shooting the problem. Don't assume it is the indicator, as these are pretty reliable. If you can find another Nav/Comm to swap into the panel, I would try that first as it is easy and cheap. Beyond that, get ready for a trip to your avionics shop. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Actually, Newmem mentioned that he was having problems with both his heading indicator (otherwise known as the Directional Gyro) and his VOR.

If fact the subject of this thread is "Heading Indicator."

I agree with Jeff_Davis troubleshooting methods for the VOR CDI.

An avionics tech MAY be able to help with the DG problem, as well. If not, see an A&P for the DG problem.

Question:

If www.cessnaparts.com [cessnaparts.com] is selling the DG brand new, why are they charging a core deposit? I can understand charging a core fee for a rebuilt unit, but a new one????

New: Part No. C661075-0104 GYRO DIREC
$ 2,708.10 (EA)
Core/Deposit of $ 3,010.00 additional
EXACT SAME PART NUMBER MUST BE EXCHANGED FOR CREDIT

I think "New" is a misnomer when it appears on those search results. That field in the program has the label "New", and cannot differentiate between conditions. I don't think there is an input for condition. The fact that a part requires a core, illustrates to me that the unit is not new, but is in fact rebuilt (overhauled).
