Guess the little McCauleys aren't as much though. $300-ish isn't bad at all.

It depends. I had mine overhauled for $500, including R&R and shipping. If you do the R&R and take it to the shop yourself, you can shave some cost.

Just remember - 300-320 in/lb torque on those bolts!

R&R is very simple. I have been doing it on all my props (except the Cardinal constant speed) and there is not much too it.

What I do on the install is put it all back on, take the bolts to snug, torque them, but allow my A/P to check the torque to his satisfaction before I safety wire and finish the assembly. That way I get the log book entry I need and he doesn't charge me anything for that.

A note on your wheel pants:
The ones mounted on the plane are from the late 60's to 1970. The 1971-1973 were another style, and , fortunately for you, the 1974 and up are all the same. If you decide to go to the correct style, it will make your plane look more modern, and since these are the most common, they are the easiest to find in salvage yards, on ebay and such. You will need to change the backing plate to fit your fairing, and there is a brake fairing on the inside to cover the brake caliper that is not available for the earlier models. You can recover your cost to "modernize" by selling the set you have WITH the mounting plates. That style is a bit hard to find in good condition, and can bring a good price on the used market.

Thanks Brian. That's what I was planning on doing minus the backing plates. Didn't realize the current backing plates wouldn't fit the '74+ wheel pants. That means I'll need to find the pants and brackets, which will likely be harded to do

If you or anyone else gets some leads on the '74+ style wheel pants, please let me know!! I haven't seen any on eBay the last couple weeks. Anyone see them at a local salvage yard? I've got none by me.

Would 172 pants fit the 150? Can't recal if they're the same fairing...

I have enough trouble landing, so taildraggers aren't my thing...but it makes me think the deal I got wasn't too bad.

- Same year
- Lower TTAF
- 100 less hours on the O/H engine
- Way better paint
- For $5,000 less

I too would be missing wheel pants...and like David, I really like the look of them too.

Wonder how hard they will be to find...

Update:

Ok, the avionics shop called back and said it's going to cost $712 to fix the MK12D. The channeling switch needs replacement as well as the display. The owner wants to settle the transaction now, so he said he'd take $800 of the price if I bought the plane now and assumed the responsibility of the radio.

Wellllll, that obviously entails taking on some more risk, but after talking with the avionics shop (Eastern Avionics), I think it'll work out. If they find anything else wrong with the unit, it'll cost more than the estimate, but they don't suspect to have any problems. Estimated completion time is 2 weeks assuming Narco's got the part in stock (will hear word about that by the end of the day).

So, it looks like I'll have a new plane by next weekend. I don't have time to fly up this Sat/Sun to grab it, but it sounds like the owner is OK with settling the transaction on Saturday, 16 March. In the meantime, the avionics shop at the field where the plane is at is installing a new Signtronics intercom (for only $350 parts/labor!) and additional cigarette lighter near the pilot yoke so I can plug the ANRs or yoke-mounted GPS into without dragging wires from the co-pilots side. The mechanic already installed the new HT hinge bearings, bushings, and bolts/nuts (w/o my consent). He said, welp if you end up buying it, pay me for it. If not, oh well I'm retired and it kept me busy for an hour. lol Very nice guy actually. I just hope he did a good job on the pre-buy and nothing too serious pops up anytime soon. We shall see!

Ahh, and I also found a paint shop near me that will mix me a quart of good polyurethane to match the rest of the engine cowl. The first thing I'm doing is painting that one section of the cowl to match the rest of it! The instrument panel is getting refurbished immediately after that, then should be good to go.

Looks like I'll finally be a "real" club member pretty soon though!
