So, what are the advantages to a 150/150 over a Skyhawk?

I'm familiar with the 172, having around 300 hours in one, and familiar with the 150/150, having around 1000 hours in Birdie, so:

The 150/150 is in a whole different performance catagory when it comes to takeoff and climb. That's it. That's the difference. What the 172 offers is comfort and more versitility. Under favorable conditions the 172 will carry 4 people at a reasonable speed in relative comfort. I would also guess that the 172 market will always be livelier due to the fact that far more buyers are looking for them at any given time. The 150/150 is something of a specialty aircraft.

Having said all that, would I trade my 150/150 for a standard 172 of similar vintage? NO!!! But a really nice 172 with a Lyc 180 horse......THAT would be hard to pass up

Thanks Dan,

That's just about the answer I was expecting. But I just wasn't sure if there may have been more to it.

So, would you agree that there is an additional element of safety in the 150/150's "spunk", as opposed to a Skyhawk "laboring"?
But the Skyhawk does have the "Big Butt" feature - especially appreciated on sweaty days.
Its the sporty Ford Mustang vs the functional Ford Taurus? Wayne's plane just has plain get-up and go, as opposed to just . . . go? (Boy, that was fun to say.)

And here's another thought for the group, at large - would we be willing to pay an extra dollar a year in dues, to allow the club to have Wayne include a "free - first year's membership" to a buyer outside of the club?

Roger

What a great idea Roger. I will take care of the membership myself. That way the SportHawk will be sure to stay in the "family".

Roger, having more power than you need is seldom a safety issue but having less than needed can be deadly. Yes...the added "spunk" can be a welcome resource when extricating one's self from that proverbial spot between a rock and a hard place. I have found myself there several times and all that saved my sorry @$$ was my mediocre skill and lots of horsepower

......But I'm going ask one of those stupid questions, "so's I's can learns" (I miss me spinach) -
It appears that the upper end of 150/150's are in the lower-mid price range and the same power range (150hp vs 160hp) of a C-172, which is 4 place and has more shoulder (or girth - for some us) space.
So, what are the advantages to a 150/150 over a Skyhawk?

Roger,
Not a ?stupid? question at all.

Comparing a 150/150 to a 172 is a lot like comparing a Corvette to an Impala. (A rather imperfect analogy.) The four seat 172 (Impala) is more roomy and a lot more comfortable and given time will run about the speed of a two seat 150/150 (Corvette). On more than one occasion my airplane has walked off and left 172s, operating at 75% power. On the other hand the 150/150 take off shorter, will out climb the 172, is a lot more nimble with much lighter controls and is just ?plane? fun. The 150/150 can be operated out of high altitude airports that really test the metal of a 172.

For a small family that does limited traveling at low altitudes and aren?t in a big hurry the 172 is the ticket.

For fun flying, exhilaration and transportation to and from high altitude airports for one or two people the 150/150 is the way to go.

As in all flying machines there are compromises. You have to give up some performance for comfort (or spend more money) or you can give up the comfort and get a lot more performance for about the same bucks. The 172 and 150/150 are simple two different airplanes and both very good at what they do.

Thanks Wayne,

I appreciate your time and answer.

Are you going to advertise it, outside of the club? Trade a Plane, or something?

Hey Wayne....want to take your chances on selling an old Cherokee 180 with a low RPM issue but a solid engine with new factory camshaft? I will even repitch the prop (although my shop won't do a progressive pitch...said they never heard of it) so that it is up to book spec.

Oh well....if I ever get it sold, I will give you a call. I really should give you a call anyway huh (just to say hello to you and Ann).

Hope you find the perfect buyer for the perfect 150/150 Wayne.
