The adventure continues…
Avionics shop pulled the panel today and found lots of misc old wires. Also found the radio was simply slid in and not secure (perhaps why commas were so bad). Yep and for that matter there are no locking devices on the radio or rack. Thoughts on these pics? Any ideas on how to secure the radio in the rack or should I look for another rack? Young tech seems to think the radio doesn’t have the locking mechanism. Thinking of making a lock tab to keep it in place. Any inputs or ideas are appreciated.

Hi,
well the tray is fine and the slit in the bottom is the locking mechanism for the radio.
In the front of the radio there should be a hole for a Allen wrench to turn the locking mechanism screw/ tab that seats the radio in the tray.
Look on the bottom of the radio and you should see a screw and a piece with 2 tabs on it.
One is for putting the radio in and seating it in the connector.
the other when you turn the Allen wrench is to pull the radio out of the connector without damaging the connectors.
If the bottom screw and tab mec. is missing that is your problem...

It must be a very young tec..

Thanks Michael! Funny thing I didn’t even pick it up while I was there. I guess we will see Monday if the screws and tabs are all there.

Vince,
when you put the radio back in spray the contacts (radio and tray) with electrical contact cleaner let it evaporate, hit it again, evaporate, then seat the radio in the tray and lock it in.
often bad contacts are the source of com's static and malfunction..
good luck

Just an update, Slowsky should be ready for pickup Thursday! Long process but pulled off all unused antennas (there were 4 extra ones total), pulled out all old unused wiring behind the panel, new panel shock mounts (Thanks Gordon!), installed the PAR 600B, installed new headset connections, hard wired PTT switches, two new radio antennas plus all new wiring for the older Comm2.

NOW ATC won’t have an excuse to not hear me!

Only issue is Avionics shop says my W&B is “out of date” and they don’t have certified scales. So I’m looking locally to find some… I think EAA chapter has a set but not sure about the “certified” part.

Anyone have much experience with doing a W&B? Never heard of one going out of date. Thoughts?

I believe the scales have to be checked for accuracy and certified on some periodic basis. Much like the scales at your local grocery store. I am not an A&P so take that for what it's worth.

Member Ron Twente IS an A&P/IA and has a set of scales. Might be a bit of a hike from Georgia, though.

EAA should have Certified scales you can rent for a small donation to their Chapter. And it is a good idea to have your aircraft weighted every 10 or so years. Especially if you have been doing a lot of modifying.

BTW, I lost my scales in the flood 3 years ago and didn't spend the money to replace them.
