I think that plane would finish up right nice !!!

Delmar's previous owner (1977 time frame) wrote me a letter expressing interest in purchasing the 1972 Aerobat. He cited Flight Following records to determine Delmar's usage. I have never used Flight Following. The previous owner did something very nice... he sent me Delmar's Original Key.

Good Luck !!

Hey Zachary.......welcome aboard.

One thing for sure......you're heart is in the right place. whistle

As Bruce mentioned, corrosion will be the trump card on a neglected plane like this. You need to know where to look and what to look for and it's not as simple as peeping into the wings and fuselage so proceed cautiously.

Past corrosion.......this looks like fun project. Lots and lots of work but what fun bringing an old gal like this back to life to fly again.

Keep us posted.....with pictures, of course.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I'm definitively going to get more serious about corrosion detection. Might spend next Saturday giving it as thorough look over as I can.

Unfortunately for me, is this "scrap value" discussion. We all know any mechanical item is worth more sold off individually than as a whole. The owner has outlined $1000 for the airframe, $4500 for the engine, and $1000 for the prop. Putting me in the $6-7k range before we even talk about those expensive Garmin units. And I can only guess those will be at minimum another $7k.

Buy the plane for $6K and tell him keep the Garmin stuff. That extra $7K will go a long way in restoring the airplane. You can buy the Garmin equipment used at a later date or never. Your choice. smile Problem solved. laugh Good luck !!

I am not an expert, but I think $4500 for the engine is a little (maybe a lot) high!

You're looking to buy the whole airplane, not the pieces.

When I buy a used car, I pay what the car is worth, not what the individual pieces are worth.

It sounds like the seller wants it both ways - you pay for the pieces, but he doesn't have to go through the work of actually parting it out and storing it while finding individual buyers.

I wonder if you can get an estimate from a salvage yard of what they would pay for the whole carcass, and then offer the seller that amount.

When my O-235 engine needed an overhaul in 2007 and I got a replacement engine from Jim Hillabrand, a club member offered to buy my old engine. I did some research and at that time a run-out engine was going from $2500 (history unknown) to $3500 (low total time). I sold mine to the club member for $2000.

I was thinking the same thing Stacey. Worn out engine that has sat for years ?? Buying a "pig n a poke" for sure. I've seen engines with 1200hrs go for that amount.

As a comparison, I have a friend that owns a 250 Comanche. Engine has 250 hours on it, CS prop was rebuilt but never installed (still in the wrapping back from the shop). The plane has been sitting in a hangar for 10 years. It isn't in bad shape, but one can by a flying Comanche for the amount of money needed to get it in shape. The owner told me the plane might be worth $5k. So there ya go. Personally, my A&P told me to stay away from that plan and no one I talked to is interested so... there ya go.

I think that is a rather accurate analysis.

Good information, thank you!

I'm all over barnstormers too, I hope it doesn't come to pulling out individual posts from there. lol.

The engine is ONLY worth Core price at best. Because that is all it is, and hardly that.

I would offer him $6,000.00 USD as it sits. You win and he gets rid of the plane that is out of Annual, out of TBO, and out of his hair.
