so, I pay again

Usually if you've paid sales tax to another state you don't have to pay again ...

-Henri

Bought my plane in Mass.. Paid 5% Mass. sales tax.

Registered it in RI because I was keeping it there and had to
pay another 2% sales tax because RI has a 7% tax.

This is virtually universal. If you live in a place with say, 10% sales tax and bought in a place with and paid an lesser sales tax, say, 5%, they you would owe the home boys an additional 5% in this case.

By the same token, if you lived where the sales tax was 5% and bought where it was, and you paid, 10%, then you owe the home folks nothing, you have paid more than their tax already... just be ready to prove it.

My bill of sale says I paid $1.00.
I didn't see any NY Taxes applicable, but figured I play it safe.
I Don't think N.C. has an applicable sales tax on personal transactions of aircraft. That's where I bought mine.
I Haven't heard a word, haven't paid a dime, There are always ways to slip the Tax-man!

Sheesh. If it wasn't for a lack of mountains and salt water I might move to Oklahoma. Here in the People's Republic of Washington, sales tax is 8.7% and the annual registration fee is $65.

Just make sure you don't end up in Kansas. Here, sales tax is 7.45% but the killer is the property tax, $950/yr on a $20K airplane; and if you overhaul the engine, they bump up the value of the plane and tax you more.

OOOOuch! Hung, That's gotta hurt! That would probably be enough to chase me over the border.

That's nearly half the value of the aircraft, spent on taxes in 10 years. Or about 4 months worth of fuel, to the average 150-152 pilot! My Gawd!

It's amazing how widely varied, state tax laws can be.

No sales tax in Alaska, registration varies, but it is $75/year in the borough I live in.

Get this, even if you don't live in the Municipality of Anchorage, but you lease a tie-down space at Merrill Field (MRI) ... a Municipality of Anchorage airport, they tax you $75 for personal property, even though you don't own property in Anchorage, you're paying an airplane tax in your home borough, and you're already paying them for the lease!

The irony is that if you used transient parking, still consuming all of the same MRI resources, you wouldn't have to pay the tax. Pay for a tie-down and you owe tax?

Time for a tea-party.

The sals tax in the metro areas of Okielandia is just short of 9% (8.8 or 8.9) and I have lived in both Oklahoma and Washington state (Edmonds) and Washington state is worth the extra $55 per year aircraft registration. We also have a state income tax and ample property taxes.

Hung,
At least in Kansas the aircraft comes off the property tax list at age 30.. Many folks here claim business use i.e. consulting, photography, counting wildlife, etc. Never hurts to apply for an exemption, they can only say no.. May depend on the county.. Good Luck

I just received a registered letter from the State of New Jersey (yes they can write). They are requesting all kinds of forms and the reason I have not paid State Sales Tax on the c150 I purchased.
Folks around here say "Don't pay. It is a one time purchase of personnal property".

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Chris,
I bought my 150 in Texas. When I brought it into Illinois, I had to pay 6% of the purchase price to base it IL. It is possible that had I not registered the plane in IL, the state would not have known that I had it. It wasn't worth it. If I'd gotten "ramp checked" by the IL DOT I would have been hit with the 6%, plus late penalty, plus penalty for not registering it. Since pilots get NOTHING from the state in terms of services and airports don't get state money either, it's just a revenue generating scheme for IL, but you can't get around it. Some folks base their planes in WI, but the closest WI airport to me is about 45 minutes away on a good day.

Which is why some owners register their planes in other states, such as Delaware!
