Carlos,

Thanks for the R22 photos. It's one of only three types of helos I've flown and I had a ball in that little gem.

Friend of mine ran an aerial photo biz out of the Boston area in an R22 for many years. She put a few thousand hours on hers (and flew it to from the west coast for the hour-required refit/overhaul at one point). She gave me some dual in it and didn't laugh at my ham-fistedness. What a responsive little sweetheart - although with no rotor inertia.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Yes the main rotor decays quickly. You have just 1.1 seconds to lower the collective during an engine failure to maintain the RPM, of course you can get it back if you're not too late but if not then it glides like an anvil in one of the Road Runner cartoons. Aside from that it's a great machine

Another thing that works is to invite all of the neighbors to come look at your toys. While you explain how everything works, you mention that you take off and land into the wind, so sometimes they'll have the chance to wave hi as you go over, but it's safer all around to do it that way.

The airfield where I live has an open-gate policy, and is empty land on 2 sides, so we have a lot of dog-walkers, ATV riders, etc, going past us on any day nice enough to fly. If they see us standing around, they will often come to chat. They will also bring their kids to look at the planes, and we usually manage to stuff the kids into a plane for some pics, while telling the parents that we have room for more planes, that planes are cheaper than the ATV they rode up in, etc.

Some neighbors would wave to me and even showed me they thought I was #1, or at least that's what I thought that finger meant. frown

UPDATE : Started cutting trees and also spoke with a neighbor who owns a 2500' grass runway about 5 miles south of me so he has the same sandy loam and coastal bermuda grass. Got lots of good info. Looks like my runway is going to end up being 2500' long after all and it's going to cost me lots of $$$$ less.

BTW I found some pictures of my 1955 Pilatus P3. I bought it about a month after the New York 9/11 attacks and on my way home we got stuck at a small airport during a fuel stop because it was right on the edge of a nuclear powerplant area. It took an entire day talking with AOPA and them talking with the FAA to get a release to keep flying home. The small tail number shows my email so many years ago and P.R. shows from where I retired from the Air Force.
