I hate hagglers! I don't use an "asking price". I set what I believe to be a reasonable price, and they low-ball you. My response is to raise the price by the difference in my original price and theirs. Then they don't know how to react. If they come up, I come down the same amount. If this continues, we wind up back at my original price.

If the conversation starts with, "Will you take less?", end of conversation.

Now, keep in mind, in other cultures haggling is part of the culture. I remember a foreign student my brother was hosting would become extremely irritated when they went shopping because they would purchase items at face value without haggling the price. I found that also with some of the foreign interest in Warner's airplane where I sensed hesitation, unsureness when I didn't "play the game!"

You're probaly correct Bill, about the cultures, but I find that these owner sales cause the bottom feeders to come out. These buzzards are hoping, mistaken to take advantage of someone.

I believe people try to factor in their own apprehension and the horror stories they heard about a purchase. That comes from buyer uncertainty and inexperience of which I had a great deal of on my recent 1st airplane purchase. Thankfully I found this board and its wealth of information and the helpfulness of members.

I do always ask what the bottom dollar is because I don't like haggling and some people price their items for haggling. It is nice when someone that has money comes along.

Good Luck !

My daughter spent a year working in China. Everything was negotiated. She got very good a it. Most Americans (me included) only experience is with car dealers.

I looked at one plane before buying 63U that was in rough shape. In my honest opinion it was over priced. I told the buyer and he dropped the price some but not nearly enough. I ended up with 63U and am very happy.

Sometimes you have to tell the seller his price is not inline with the current market and he will have to lower price or you will take your business elsewhere. But be realistic with your counter offer.

Good wife, good friends & a Cessna 150. Life is good.

In the US, mostly everything new is sold at fixed price, except houses, vehicles, boats... In other countries, especially 3rd world, everything is negotiated. Bargaining skill is one of the things that mothers teach their daughters in Vietnam, because the women do most of the shopping at markets for daily food. If they are not good at bargaining, their families won't have much food to eat.

When we came to the US, there are at least two things that we like: fixed prices and lining up for service. I was so tired of the pushing/jostling for everything in Vietnam.

Congrats, Tom. Hate to see it leave the U.S. but such is life.

I'll always have fond (but embarrassing) memories of your plane when at Clinton a few years ago, I removed your top cowling so I could see first hand the installed Sparrowhawk baffling thinking your plane was Matt Willet's......God how embarrassing. blush blush

God only knows the thoughts that were going through your mind as you walked up on the above scene......I'm not sure how I would have reacted if the rolls had been reversed.

I'm lucky you didn't knock my lights out and drop me where I stood. grin

May your future 182 partnership work out well for both sides and the plane is everything that you hope for.
