Required? No. Prudent? Well, have you ever seen "panic flying?" I will never forget the day I watched a Mooney 231 come sceaming into a non-tower airport and slam it on to keep it from floating in ground effect - sans landing gear. Had an electrical fire, smoke from insulation filling the cabin and was way too busy fighting the smoke and getting it on the ground NOW to lower the gear manually, having shut off the master. He slid for around 2000 ft of the runway and they piled out like a disturbed anthill as it was coming to a stop.

A fire extinguisher was my first aircraft "accessory" purchase, no hesitation.
