You don't need to be a CFI. Does the EAA allow you to fly YE in Canada? Anyways I see it as an extension of some youth work I did for years. Kids don't have to become pilots. Though of the 26 YE's I've flow in in the last nearly two years - two are now in formal pilot training with flight schools. In the case of others how about this:
"While it is wonderful to watch XXXX enjoying his flying - I also enjoy watching aviation help XXXX get a handle on reading and math. A preflight checklist and weight and balance calculation used to be a significant challenge for XXXX - now they are just an important part of going flying which XXXX tackles without thinking about it."
And from a selfish standpoint - if we don't pump prime GA with youngsters - there will be no GA when we get around to retiring.
