Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 13,969 | That is how I earned my spending money during the summers in High School was as ground support for a crop sprayer, (I had my driver's license at age 15.) The aircraft I have serviced were the Pawnee, Callair and Thrush Commander where the nearest straight stretch of road to the job served as the base. Now, I have had the pilot sit in my lap when it wasn't practical to move the ground support truck. But, riding in the hopper? People here are very aware of my lack of tolerance for using the word "stupid", but in this case the term would definitely apply!

Sounds like we did the same sort of thing, although the outfit I worked for had only Call Airs. We used gravel roads that were as close to the field as possible because the airplanes were fairly slow and "you can't make money with the gate closed," ferrying cost money.
I never did get ferried in the airplane, always repositioned via the flag car or the loading truck.
I agree with your application of the word stupid in the context mentioned!
Did you ever get to fly the Call Airs?

I just can't see anyone doing that! In the hopper.... I washed planes, fueled, put in oil, loaded poison (mostly DDT), flagged and chased parts; I loved ever minute of it. | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 11,389 Likes: 923 Member/10,000+ posts! | Member/10,000+ posts! I got many of my ratings that way (one of the few jobs for a high school kid that paid well). My first summer flagging and loading was the last year DDT was legal. Interesting the next few years as folks tried to find something to replace it. The owner is a Southwest Captain and he has his cross hairs on a certain Bonanza.....(not mine. ) Jim Do you know if the Tiger is still available?

She was a nice one too.
