I'm in research mode still, but there are a couple of 1981 152's close by for sale. Any recommendations on a year?
I fly for enjoyment, usually within 50 miles VFR.
Both are close to $25k with ~600 hours TT

Chris,
~600 hrs TT or TSMO ?
I have a 1980 152 and love it! I like the 0-235 L2C
over the N2C that was installed in the 1983 model year and later,
but that is just a personal choice.

Where in the Northeast are you located?
We have an active group of 150 and 152's here in the NE (see attachment).
Join us this Saturday at Columbia County NY (1B1)
if the weather is good.

Typo, that's ~6000 TTAF and both are mid-time engines.

Southern New Jersey actually.

Chris:

More importantly, what are the TAFT, Total Air Frame Time, and ET, Engine Time on this bird.

It is very important to consider the TT Tach Time, for Time In Service items such as the vacum pump, and/or the magnetos. If they are like mine, the Slick 4301, has a TBO of 500 hours as does the Airborne Vacum System.

Just something to consider in your search.

Thanks, Herb Rose, N5793E; KZER

Herb, This is where I get frustrated by folks selling. I asked one Airport owner and he showed me a maintenance log and points to where the Tach was replaced. Then he says subtract the 2 times, and add the time now to the difference when the tach was changed, but the numbers were crazy.
He says "Get it?", I say no. He says "well that's how you do it" and walks away.
I don't think he wants to sell the plane.
The one I'm looking at says "5800 TTA, 1640 TTE, Nav-Com, Xponder, Fresh Annual, Excellent Condition. "
I reveiwed the log for AD's, but don't know enough yet to be sure I'm looking at the right numbers.

Thanks

Herb: Where did you come up with the 500hr TBO for Slick 4301 mags? My Slick Maintenance and Overhaul Manual schedules an 100hr inspection then 500hr inspections....maybe I'm not understanding this correctly.

Jeff:

The timing and function of the 4301 Slick is checked at every annual/100 hours of operation. The mags themself are to be overhauled at 500 hours. I'm sure Charles, Carl, and or Kirk will chime in here. That said, Columbia Aviation, at N13 will confirm this should you desire to call them. The cost to overhaul them right now is about half of the cost of a new unit. I've also checked with my AP/IA, Don, and he also confirms this: Slicks are overhauled at 500 hours.

Chris:

If the total of ALL tach times does not equal the total air frame time, something is radically wrong!

The cost of an aircraft is proportionally related to the documentation of the aircraft, the maintenance completed, and the over all appearance of the said aircraft. If the asking price has not been substantially reduced for those short-falls, you should be the one walking away!

Hope it helps, Herb Rose, N5793E; KZER

Mine, as probably most, had a couple of tach changes, and the guy I bought it from made sure I was given the documentation to validate TT. If the owner is less than accomodating, I would be unwilling to write a check. It has been discussed on the forum, deal with a seller who is upfront about the condition of the craft. Incidentally, I have had to change the tach again since I purchased my 150 and was able to get the new tach(no Hobbs) to indicate TTSN at a small increase in price. Sure makes things easier!
