It was a selfless act, and in the bigger picture where things like nobility of spirit dwell, absolutely the right thing, though requiring personal sacrifice from you. You put a loved one before yourself, and no one will be prouder than you when you are gathered there on a summer green lawn along with all the other parents to preside over her graduation from college some years from now. And she will look at you with love and gratitude, in full knowledge that it was you who provided the wings with which she attained her dream.
This will come as cold consolation, no doubt, but full marks, summa cum laude and well done as a parent, Tim!
