The strut doesn't have to be dropped, you A&P can modify the fairing as per the attachment.

George,

What do the screws anchor into behind the fairing? When I pulled mine for the annual I don't remember seeing anything to screw them into. I'd love to be able to replace them without dropping the strut as well.

Don't know how much effort to put into splitting the strut fairings. It takes less then 15 minutes to change them by just removing the wing root inspection cover, loosen things off a tad, and then take out the bolt holding the strut to the wing. There's enough give in all else to just push the wing up a bit and then pull the fairings off and replace. Sounds complcated, but my AME and I did both sides in about 30 minutes or so. I've done the same on 172's and they're just as easy.

There is a piece of aluminum riveted to one side of the split for the screws to enter. You can just see the line of csk rivets on the opposite side from the screws.

I have no idea how much effort was involved, it was done before I got the airplane. The previous owner stated that his A&P felt that it was worth the effort.
