But, could you expect to get that much for it if put up for sale? Nah. You can ask, but will you get any buyers?

I know one instance where want the value of my airplane to be as low as possible, and that is when the County of Santa Clara asks me to give them my annual estimate of its value for their annual appraisal for property tax purposes. I'm supposed to give TTAF, TSMOH, etc. There is a list of things I am supposed to check off and estimate "good condition," "average condition," "Poor condition," etc.

In past years, the exterior and interior were listed as fairly "poor."

As I recall, last year the plane was appraised at $17,500 or something like that, and that's after I told them I had an engine overhaul. 1.5 percent x $17,500 = approx. $263 in annual property tax.

It will be interesting to see how much higher the county appraises the value of a standard 1968 C-150 when I inform them that I had plane painted and that I spruced up the interior this year. I'm figuring maybe it will go up to $20K, at the most.

If they have the audacity to tell me it is appraised at $40K-$50K, they will have an argument on their hands.

==>> Looks like I'm "stepping away" from aviation after all. Bye, folks!

Ain't no way I would get that... not even half... maybe a third.

Yeah, it's a lotta money, but i knew what i was getting into when I bought it, and nobody but myself made me buy it. Besides, I've had more fun, pleasure, and memories flying it that ya can't put a price on. Besides, I wouldn't have met the folks in the Club here!

Ya can't put a price on that, gang.

I've put a bit more money in my 152 than I could get out of it, but it was a little here, a little there and now I've got one of the best 152's on the planet, and no idea (or concern) what the total tally is.

All I know, is that it is spendid to look at, a genuine pleasure to fly, and a joy to own. I don't intend to sell it, nor do I care to audit it. It's all mine, and for me, it is perfect. I love my airplane.

(I wouldn't even consider an even trade on a fully equipped spanking new 162)

You certainly can't Poobs. While we may sink more money into our planes than they are worth in the end it is satisfaction we get from the pleasure that the planes provide us.

It is important that you recognise the difference between "Value adding" and operational on going expenditure....some people cant quite distinguish that small but important fact.

More than half the stuff you have listed there are ongoing "operational expences" not Value added items - e.g.just cause you spend 0.76 on getting the mags fixed does not raise the value of the 0.76. That said, the retained value of the Value Added items is no where near the initial purchase price when it comes to Resale - that is, everything depreciates from Day 1

It's like people who list the Annual rego for their car, and service costs as added value, its an expense - i.e the car cost 10K I've registered it twice @ $500.00pa and had it serviced in that time for $1200.00 so now it owes me $12,200. What it really owes you is the cost of purchase less Depreciation, those other two costs were operational expences, not value added to the base price.

I get more pleasure just having three non-airworthy airplanes in MY hangar than I'd ever acquire from selling all of them in a fully restored condition. They are mine (such as they currently are) and I just can't really put a monetary value on that.
