One I don't see here is a reference to a mechanic. I think it was IA? Any idea what this is?

Inspection Authorization.

An add on rating to an A&P mechanic (Airframe & Powerplant) license.

An IA is necessary to sign off an annual inspection or the bottom of a FAA Form 337, Major Alteration or Repair form. An A&P can sign for the work done for the Form 337, but an IA must sign the inspection box (the same person, if an IA, may sign both places on the form)

When I was a kid, my Mentor sometimes called them AI's (Authorized Inspectors). I learned later this was actually backwards, but I sometimes still call them AI's rather than more properly IA's.

I occasionally hear of A&P's being refered to as A&E's (Airframes and Engines).

The first time I read that someone took his plane to his AME for repairs, I thought "Man, a doctor that does mechanic work too!". Turned out, the poster was a Canadian, and he was talking about an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Canadian term), and not an Aviation Medical Examiner (American term).

Yes, he only worked on V-tailed Bonanzas however!

The only one I really remember very well, was from my days of fixing flying school aircraft, and it was

UTSB

Which means... UP - THE - S#IT - BONZA ( refering to an instrument or radio, not working properly or broken right at the time it was reallllly needed most )
