Guys, why can't we all be happy with our own opinions, and let others have theirs? Where is it written that we have to "convert" anybody to our way of thinking? The pursuit of happiness means different things to different people, and provides diversity of choice. What we choose shouldn't necessarily affect the decisions of others, or their decisions affect ours.

It should be enough for us to be happy with what we choose, not what anyone else chooses! It doesn't make any of us right or wrong... just individuals with differing desires.

So, Mark, what is exactly the criteria that raises an aircraft above the level of a kite and an engine not to be considered to come from a lawnmower? smirk

Caution: Careful Mark, it's a trap! eek

Lots of government rules and regulations that are designed to keep me and the flying public happy and safe.

But Mark! I done do believe that the aircraft listed as the topic of this thread is perfectly legal....................

I'm confused (and not really that motivated to research it) but... what is the definition of an airplane that can use the ATC system, fly in Class B through G sirspace, etc.; versus a flying machine that can't do these things?

I remember going to a fly-in at Georgetown, CA, with regular, normal airplanes, and there was one (strange) guy who had flown a couple of hudred miles in some motorized hanglider contraption, and he was bragging about how the feds had no juristiction over him. His flying machine didn't look like it could cost more than a few thousand bucks.

Am I correct that any aircraft that uses the "system" must meet certain legal criteria? Isn't it well known that the high price of airplanes is because of all the stinkin' lawyers?

In answer to your first question.........NO...........if it is in fact a legal ultralight, it does not have to meet any criteria whatsoever. I asked the tower if he had a problem with ultralights landing at the Class D airport. he said no, as long as they have a radio.

I agree with you on the second question.

Most of those hanglider contraptions cost more than your Cessna. Take a look at www.northwing.com [northwing.com] look at some of the prices.....then you can shake your head.

Ouch!

Hmmmm....I wonder if that includes the stinkin' lawyer that set up the Clinton 2010 Fly-In Foundation, pro-bono, too?

Maybe, it includes the lawyers that are members of this club, own 150s-2s and participate regularly?

Sheesh. Let's try again, shall we? This post is about the cost of production of a new aircraft. Not the likes and dislikes of ultralight aircraft. I was just using this plane for an example. It only costs a little over $20,000. Complete and ready to fly. Now, add a section to the fuselage for a second seat. A few more ribs in each wing to get some more area. Add some horsepower to the nose. And WALLA. A brand new two seater airplane for a third, half or more, the cost of most other ready to fly LSA's.
