The seat back on my pilot seat broke today. I swapped it with the seat back from the passenger side for the time being.

Any ideas on where to buy a pilot new seat? Not a seat cover, the entire assembly.

Cessna C-150H.

(Thank God it didn't happen when I was in climb out, or worse yet, in IMC.)

Send it to Shelby and he'll fix it.

Mark,

It's fun hanging on with your fingernails to the dash while trying to hold the yoke with the other, ain't it? eek

Mine broke shortly after breaking ground climbing out of Baker Oregon. Thank goodness I:

1) I continually trim for the mode of flight I am presently in. (My right hand/arm lives on the trim wheel when not around Justina.)

2) I had the presence of mind to let go of the yoke temporarily.(Since the plane was trimmed the yoke didn't move very far.)

3) Had the baggage compartment full thus supporting the seat some what.

Upon closer inspection of the seats, I found that there there were weld repairs upon weld repairs. So repairing it really wasn't an option. I started calling different salvage yards. Ultimately finding a pair at a good price at Central Air Parts. Of course, there always is ebay and Barnstormers.

Now, you will wanna keep in mind that they changed the seat rails some time in the early 70's. So, I believe you are restricted with seats from 1965-1971.

Good luck!

I agree with Hung. I sent mine to Shelby last year and he fixed them and redid the upholstery. Great job.

It happened on the ground, at Reid Hillview (RHV) just after I had fueled up. A very nice guy with tools helped me swap co-pilot and pilot seat backs and on got me back on my way in less than half an hour.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, I saw those and was considering them, but they are for 1977 model, so according to Bill, they won't work. They don't look quite the same, either.

I'm looking around, and will also consider Shelby, although the Shelby option would ground me for quite a while.

This problem will not prevent me from going to Alvord, as I could fly with co-pilot seat removed.

Shelby won't take long and you can rest assured they will be better than new!

I'm definitely considering Shelby -- including a re-upholster job while he's at it.

If I go that route, it will be around the last month of September. I'm emailing him now.

Still -- if anyone has a seat or seat back they'd like to sell, let me know.

Shelby just wrote me. He'll re-uphoster, but he also offered to just repair the seat back if I didn't want to go with a full re-upholstry at this time.

That was a really nice offer.

Since my seat upholstry is not that bad, I'm going to take him up on the repair offer. That way, I can send him the one seat back, still have a good pilot seat to use, and my plane will not be out of commission. Plus I save money. The thought of spending $1,500 for new leather upholstry -- while tempting -- is not something I want to contemplate right now, especially if I don't really need to. Some day, yes, but not now...

Don't forget to get a mechanic's sign off on a new weight and balance with that seat removed, Mark. wink
