But, there's no place to stay anywhere near OSH. Overnighting in Milwaukee just because there are rooms available -- but I would consider some place else south of OSH to overnight. I hear Milwaukee has some pretty rough neighborhoods, yes....?

Milwaukee is pretty rough. Try Sheboygan.

Hotels are tough to get, but dorm rooms might not be. The AirVenture Web Site should have a list of dorms open for the event. I stayed in Appleton at the dorms for Lawrence University (I think that was the one)...Prices were cheap too. I think they have a few options in a couple of different directions out of OshKosh.

I believe their site also has "home stay" options where you can go rent a room from one of the locals. That's what I did in 06

Today at work, we were asked "what our vacation plans are for the summer," which made me feel more confident that I'll have a job this summer -- maybe -- so I booked the flights and hotels. Here's the itinerary for my wife and I:

Wednesday, July 29 -- Depart San Jose, CA 1:30 p.m., American Airlines nonstop Flight 336, Arrive Chicago, Ill., at 7:40 p.m. Drive in Herz rental car to Sheboygan, WI, and stay at the Harbor Winds Hotel.

Thursday, July 30 -- drive to Oshkosh, WI, for a day at AirVenture. That night, drive to Madison, WI, for a night at Comfort Inn and Suites.

Friday, July 31 -- Drive to Clinton, for two nights at Country Inn Suites. Attend the Fly-In, including the Saturday night banquet.

Sunday, Aug. 2 -- Drive to Chicago to catch the American Airlines nonstop Flight 309 at 10:05 a.m., arrive in San Jose at 12:35 P.M.

Thanks to everyone here who have knowledge of the Illinois/Wisconson/Iowa area, and helped me make my travel plans.

Avery,

Quick question, I just signed up with eAPIS, it seems to have everything there that is required, both for arriving and departure, wouldn't using a second party to transmit the info to eAPIS just complicate things?

Oshkosh has decent camping facilities. They have showers and now flush toilets. We drove in and tented there in 2005 and 2007 and will be back this year.
