I will NOT be flying my C-150 from California. I'd like to check out Oshkosh for a day or two first, then drive a rental car from Oshkosh to Clinton, and drop the rental car off at Quad Cities, and depart Quad Cities via commerical airline for home.
What's the best big airport to arrive -- via commercial airline -- near Oshkosh, that has rental cars?

The easiest, and probably cheapest, thing to do would be fly to Chicago (O'Hare or whatever), rent a car, and drive to Oshkosh (176 miles). Then, drive from Oshkosh to Clinton (241 miles), then drive from Clinton back to Chicago (145 miles) and drop the car off and fly home from Chicago. Messing around with regional airlines is too much of a hassle, and too expensive. | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 666 Member/500+posts | Member/500+posts Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 666 | I would suggest that you fly to Milwaukee, not regional carriers, drive to Oshkosh, next to Clinton and then check out the Quad Cities in Iowa. Milwauskee is a lot closer to Oshkosh then Chicago. Also, lodging is very scarce, in the area, including nearly cities. You might want to investigate that now, perhhaps on the EAA web site. Maybe, you could catch a ride with someone to Clinton from Oshkosh. WIL Stoughton, WI | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 7,054 Likes: 99 Member/5000+posts! | Member/5000+posts! I'm not interested in flying either to Milwaukee or Quad Cities, because it entails switching planes, etc. How's this for an itinerary?

Look for something in Madison or Dubuque Iowa after the Oshkosh stop. (July 29)
I live half way between Chicago and Milwaukee so let me know if you need any local assistance or input, and I was born and raised in Madison WI. | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 7,054 Likes: 99 Member/5000+posts! | Member/5000+posts! Look for something in Madison or Dubuque Iowa after the Oshkosh stop. (July 29) Now THAT'S a good idea. THANKS! Since I'm in that part of the country (first time ever for me), I want to see Oshkosh Air Adventure -- if only for a day. I think for me a round-trip San Jose-Chicago nonstop is the easiest and cheapest way to go, instead of hassling with regional airlines. I'll just put a lot of miles on a rental car that week. No problem. That lets us (my wife and I) see that part of the country. Thanks again for the suggestion, Robbie. I doubt if I'll have any trouble finding a hotel in either Madison or Dubuque. Obviously, Oshkosh is booked solid that week....

Madison can actually be booked solid - but let me know what you find. My family is still there and I know a couple local places that are off the beaten path and on the way to Dubuque.
Stay in touch - I'll be at OSH and then Clinton. Like I said, we live right on the way up. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,054 Member/1000+posts | Member/1000+posts Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,054 | Only one point to make here - Oshkosh to Milwaukee is in the wrong direction.

I used to fly there via Chicago (O'hare) but lately find it far less of a hassle to rent a car at O'hare drive to western Illinois, visit family and drive back to O'hare rather than do the plane change fandango. As long as you aren't mixing it up with rush hour traffic in Chicago the road trip is pretty painless if a little long.
