Has anyone ever done it?

What's that expression, like buying a pig in a poke?

It would seem you might get lucky and win with a low bid but then there is no way of knowing what you have bought, a real jewel or a collection of aircraft parts in who knows what kind of shape.

As you can see I am new here so be gentle with me.

Larry - it's been done successfully. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if you can get somebody you can trust to take a peek at it and give you a PIREP on it you can have a better idea of the condition of the bird. That goes for the other sources for planes, too.

One expression I like for a particularly junky airplane is spare parts flying in formation.

Hmmm.

The traditional pre-buy inspection would help put concerns to rest but the time frame for some of these auctions are pretty tight.

I bought my 1966 C-150F on Barnstormers.com and got a great deal! I think others here on the forum have done the same.

Welcome, Larry. This is a great group.

And that is my point. If you find something that you are interested in some distance from home, there may be somebody in the club close enough to go take a look.

There aren't many of us who would pass up an excuse to trot out to the airport and pet airplanes.

I bought/found my 150 on ebay.

I took a trip to see the aircraft and have a pre-buy inspection done before placing my bid.

So from what you say Keenan sometimes it is possible to get all the ducks in a row.

Bill does the Barnstormers website provide the auction function like eBay?

Learn something new every day.

No, it's just a classified ad site just for aviation. No auction function involved. I've sold some items there as well. Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum Larry!!

Yes sir it is sometimes possible. I admit it was not easy and I must correct myself, I “cautiously” placed my bid before I had the pre-buy completed. I actually got lucky, hope this link to my buying experience works as it will explain…
