He said, "I dont mean to be rude FATTY, but you'll never get a 150 off the ground. You'll have to go with a 172." I was wondering if there are any of you out there that are 260+ that still fly a 150-152. I guess if I had someone with me I might have to get a tow up and leave all the fuel behind and be a glider. | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 18,962 Likes: 3 Member/15,000 posts | Member/15,000 posts Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 18,962 Likes: 3 | I've now reached 250! When I was a lightweight (235) I took a friend up in my 150K who MUST have topped 250! I left 13 gallons of fuel on the ground, but I know I was still (slightly?) over gross. This was off 2,600' of turf, 50'+ trees, and 3,000' DA. No flaps, I extended the nose strut and let the airplane fly herself off (about 1,100' of ground run) and left the nose low until I had 75 mph IAS, then held that speed for the climb. We cleared the trees by a good 250'-300'. Believe me, you'd rather be (slightly?) overgross than ask a woman her WEIGHT! I wouldn't have tried it if the (interpolated) book numbers looked unfavorable, or if I didn't know my airplane! You won't have any trouble at all, especially if you have more runway than I do! | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 68 Member | Member Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 68 | Carl, I told my son where you were and He said they fly over that place a lot. (I have since slimmed down a bit to a girlish figure of 215.) But, at the time the 150 still did the job well for us.....................

I weight 190 lbs and I took a buddy of mine that weighs 180 lbs and it was a pretty tight fit in the little 150F

When I weighed about 190 I took a Blind friend that weighed a little over 350 flying in my plane. Full fuel and my flight bag in the rear. Can you say over gross? The plane flew fine. We did have a 5K runway. The landing was the best part of the flight however. My friend Marty has been blind from birth. This however has not stopped him from doing many things we all do everyday. He had driven a car on the freeway while sitting in the driver's seat and taking comands from his "eyes" that were sitting in the right front seat. That should scare you to know people do that sort of thing. Well Marty had never flown an airplane and wanted to. I let him have the controls once we were on a long final the approach was very interesting to say the least. I gave him comands and he flew the final approach, sort of. I took over control after the tower asked if something was wrong. What a day he had. Long story short the 150 will fly heavy. don't be reckless, it can cost you plenty. Come to think of it, this was done in a rental 152, but same differance. I would not recommend making a habbit out of doing this sort of thing to your airplane but it will do it. As for cabin space, it was tight to say the least.

I bet we must have been 1 or 2 lbs under gross and never had any problems. I used to weigh 247 before I went on a diet but still had no trouble.

There are special considerations when flying overgross. ALL stall speeds are higher than listed, all runways a little shorter than advertised, and all trees a little taller than they look, so add extra safety margin to everything you do. They will fly well when overgross, but there IS a limit that nobody wants to find! | | |
