Haha! LOL, Ed!

Reminds me of a high school friend of mine in the 60's!

We were out "cruising" one afternoon in his hopped up '64 BelAir, when he spies a blonde in a tank top driving a '59 Impala convertable about 3 cars ahead of us. Watching that long blonde hair blowing in the slipstream, he decided he had to meet her!

We followed the '59 across town and down side streets and through intersections, but it took forever to safely get around the traffic in front of us to a point just behind the Impala. We followed the pretty hair a couple more blocks, and the car finally pulled into a shopping center parking lot. We followed! As the Impala pulled into a parking spot, my friend pulled his BelAir behind, and started to get out of the car. Just as he got his feet on the ground, the driver of the Impala stepped out and turned to face us, carrying a sawed off baseball bat! This long haired bearded dude was pissed!

"Why are you two following me?" he demanded!

We couldn't leave the area guick enough! grin

Now, back to your regularly scheduled LSA discussion!

My dad and I flew to Duluth, MN for a meeting on Monday. He and I were discussing the Cessna LSA, among other things, and I mentioned that I would lose 70 pounds of cargo capacity with the LSA. He made the observation that I have a lot more plane in the 150 than I would have in the LSA.

The Cessna Skycather, like any LSA, is designed for a specific mission. Within that mission, it is probably a good plane. But, is it as flexible as a 150 or 152? I don't think so. I doubt it will ever be able to fly IFR. The pictures I have seen are lacking any backup instruments (even the Legend Cub with glass cockpit has an option for backup instruments). That alone would be enough to keep it "VFR only".

Now, don't get me wrong. If one showed up at my door (house or hanger) looking for a home, I would probably let it stay .... if the price was right. wink

A Cessna LSA is not a certified aircraft in the same way as a Cessna 150 or 152. A LSA only has to meet consensus standards. Can changes be made to the Cessna LSA by the owner with IA approval without the need for a lot of paperwork. In other words, if you decide to use autogas, or convert to 85 percent ethanol, or put in a different attitude indicator, what requirements must be met? Are Form 337s or STCs still needed for LSA. Or, for that matter can you make any changes at all that depart from the factory version.

To continue, would any changes to an LSA make it experimental, or would it remain an LSA?

I don't think those things have been thought out.

It has a type certificate, so being an LSA wouldn't change the regs on modifications or maintenance, I wouldn't think. It should be treated the same as any other category, from a mechanical viewpoint, unless I missed something!

I thought the same as you Carl. But I was just recently shown my errors. There are some very significant changes of how, and who, can do maintenance on a LSA [sportpilot.org] certified aircraft.
