Corey, welcome to the club! You have made the right decision to join. Not too long ago I was in a similar position--I really wanted to get into flying, but the avialability of rentals made it nearly impossible for me to fly.

I joined up here and asked lots of questions, and before you know it I became a proud Cessna 150 owner.

Take a look at this (rather long) thread to see how my airplane buying experience went.

New Member. Help me buy my first airplane.

Everyone here was quite helpful and I am very happy with my purchase.

I would probably take a flight or 2 in a Cessna 150 or 152 prior to buying one to make sure that it feels comfortable to you.

Hi Timothy,

Yes I've read that entire thread. Its one of the reasons I don't need to ask so many questions. They've already been answered!!

Beautiful plane by the way. I love black and white.

I took a look at a 72 150L in Springer yesterday. If I get my questions answered, I may go up in it. That would mark my first actual experience in the type. When I say there is nothing around here to rent, I really mean it. Most of these planes are rather scary, and the ones that are in Excellent condition are private party owned.

I really think I'll gain a HUGH bit of experience in Clinton. Not flying mind you, but rather 100's of enthusiasts talking about these planes.

You can go for rides, if you want to. There will be some instructors there that would probably be happy to take you for a ride, too. All you have to do is make it known that you want to go up. Often, there is a shortage of nerf delivery specialists (the dudes or duddettes that toss the nerf footballs out the window at the target). Lessee...That's what everyone looks for, but no one needs...an excuse to fly in Clinton!!! grin grin grin

Now THAT sounds like something I and my daughter could do -- nerf delivery specialist. Make ourselves useful at the same time as we break the ice and become acquainted with you all(assuming we manage to make it to Clinton --am looking into that now. It would be such a privelege to meet you all and learn about the Cessna 150 and 152 from you. And speaking of getting to Clinton: anybody got any tips on the best way to get to Clinton taking regular air transport from Boston? We'll leave Norway with Icelandair and go to Boston where I have family. But to go to Clinton from there - does one fly Boston-Chicago-Dubuque and then rent a car from there?) Guess I am in the wrong forum here, but never mind.

OK....how does one become a first rate nerf delivery specialist? Any rules of thumb to follow? Focus on that spot and then toss just before the plane passes over, keeping hard focus and remembering follow through like when you play tennis or throw a ball?

First a nerf delivery specialist...and then one year, when I have my license and my own bird...honorable nerf carrier!

Jennifer,

Nerf delivery is 10% skill and 90% luck. You'll get 3 chances (in 3 passes). There will be people on the ground with flags to help you gauge the wind direction and strength.

As for getting to Clinton by commercial flight, if you're going by yourself and doesn't carry much luggage, somebody probably can give you a ride from the big airport to Clinton. If you're traveling with your daughter and much luggage, a rental car is probably best.

If you want more details, you might want to start a new thread in the "Clinton Forum" so we don't hijack Corey's thread.

Thanks, Hung! Advice noted and very much appreciated.

Corey, I am so sorry to have derailed the thread a little. I've been following it closely, for like you, I am eager to learn how to buy one's first aeroplane, even though in my case, I am awfully premature. Thanks to your questions, and the responses of the members and the links and threads they have provided, I too have been learning alot vicariously and doing all sorts of "dry runs", trying to apply the pointers I read here to ads I read in the classifieds here and in Barnstormers.

Hijack away! No really, your post is immediately more interesting that anything I've come up with. And as far as you being " awfully premature ", I'm looking for a plane and don't have my Pilots license yet. You cant get more premature that that!!

Did I mention I got a crap getting into the plane yesterday? Hahaha....pathedic. Oh and I did the classic turn the yoke and look at the tail. Hahahah

I could of swore the two older guys watching me, placed a bet if I'd fall out of the plane on exit.

Premature...that's funny!

Boston to Quad-Cities, Illinois (KMLI) and then rent a car to Clinton (50km).

Hi Corey, welcome to the club,

Awesome undertaking and I wish you the best. My thoughts would be in looking to purchase an airplane, stick to something that you can readily find instructors to teach you with. A friend of mine years ago did exactly what you plan doing, his problem was he went and bought himself a Cherokee 180, and after his purchase he just couldn't find someone to instruct him on that model,, he eventually sold it and got out of flying.

I see you're looking for a 150? Might I suggest you start up a post, and list out what you would like,, hours, year, avionics, add any extras you might like,, But, realize that these little planes are about 20 years plus in age, so keep that in mind when looking. You'd be surprised at how many folks visit this site and the "telegraph system" might work very well for you, nothing to loose from doing it,,
