John, That's a good idea to score the pin a bit, to provide grip to the pin.

As far as wiring the thing in,, that would work well also,, might look a bit gaudy mind you but practical,

Typically roll pins are good for a few insertions,, and then should be turfed. I've no idea how many times mine might of been removed and put back in. It's like re-using bolts and or nuts, over and over again. Eventually they've outlived there usefulness and should just be replaced.
