Jake, first of all: Welcome to the club. There are few Cessna 150 questions that can't be answered by someone here on the forum.
Nice examples of the 150 can be had economically in these times of financial distress. The 152 is substantially more costly and would offer no benifits I can think of for a basic commuter and time builder, although maybe an IFR 152 would be easier to find than an IFR 150(?) The San Diego to L.A. commute would be quite feasible for a 150 with generally friendly weather and the modest distance. I think a mid-time engine will likely offer the best value but overall condition and a good history is EVERYTHING when it comes to aircraft buying. The answers to most of your questions on this subject will have to be considered within the context of what you're willing to spend to achieve your goals...and only YOU know the particulars of that.
Again......WELCOME!!! Post often, everyone will enjoy reading whatever you have to share. And keep in mind that NO question is too basic or advanced to be asked/answered here.
