I like the Skymaster. A cool bird!
I seem to remember Cessna ads in the 60's calling it 'Everyman's P-38' because of the twin boom design.
The performance of the first models was poor but I always thought they looked cool.
It also seems that most of the safety issues concerned inattention by the pilot and poor run-ups. The rear engine had a tendency to vapor lock during taxi on hot days and pilots were known to take off on one engine. Pilots I've known who have flown them a lot apply power to the rear engine first as a fool-proof method of determining full power on the out-of-sight-out-of-mind engine.
