If they did, they weren't very smart. A Lycoming O-235 weighs 250 lbs; other engines probably weigh about the same. Far exceeds the limit for the cargo area. Plus, getting an engine back there would be a real bear. I loaded an O-235 into the back of a minivan and it was a tight fit.
